The Ghost Light of BaconsCastle and LawnesCreek Church

Chapter 5

There was one other incident at that graveyard that bears telling. It involved a lazy summer afternoon when a group of out of town visitors who were spending the weekend with me, just happened to bring up the subject of the ghost light. It seemed inevitable. When conversations began to bog down or became stagnant, the subject of the ‘ghost light’ would invariably come up and things would liven rather rapidly after that. I had learned my lesson a long time ago about trying to convert anyone to my beliefs about the paranormal. Even though this phenomenon could very easily be a real entity, I contained myself and just sat back and listened. Then to my amazement someone in the crowd suggested that it would be a great experience to wait until dusk and then go down to the church graveyard and wait for the ghost to come out. Someone else ‘chided in’ that we could not possibly miss seeing the ghost this night for after all it was the night of the full moon. I had reservations about joining ten city slickers as they went out to see or perhaps, poke fun at "my" ghost. However, in lieu of being considered a rude host, I reluctantly gave in. We arrived at the graveyard just as it was getting dusky dark armed only with a couple of unreliable flashlights which occasionally required violent shaking in order to make them work. The plan was to park the cars just off the edge of the roadway where we would have a good view of the area should anything chance to happen and the light appear. It sounded good to me and it could definitely be the only safe way to control all these novices and maybe prevent them from hurting themselves or the ghost!

After a few restless minutes and to my utter amazement, everyone’s adrenal glands began to overact as they decided to get out of the cars and enter the graveyard in order ‘to read some of the epitaphs on the tombstones with flashlights while they patiently waited for the ghost to appear.’ Once again I was the only dissident and had no other alternative but to relent. To avoid panic and severe trampling at the slightest unusual sight, I informed everyone as to how headlights from cars passing along the highway in either direction after dark would appear as an orange reflection on some of the polished tombstones very much like that of the ‘ghost light’. How realistic it would appear depended on how the tombstones happened to be situated and where one might be standing. It was the type of occurrence that could easily be mistaken for an apparition by a super-nervous ghost hunter and cause severe panic! After I showed them how even a flashlight beam could produce the same results, they relaxed but did start to kid around about a ghost coming whenever a car passed. Some would even shine their flashlight on a grave and scream "there it is". This would create pandemonium for an instant but eventually everyone got used to that. As is always the case, at the height of any horseplay something will happen and it did! They had cried wolf one time too many! An oval pale orange light was suddenly appearing from between the boxwoods in the area of the Simpson grave and starting to move toward the church. It was thought to be another fun thing at first until the stark realization hit everyone at the same time! This thing was fast taking shape and definitely had a mind of its own! There was no traffic on the highway and the flashlights were not shining that way and it was moving! Then all hell broke loose!

Since the cars had been parked just off the highway to allow for complete coverage of anything that came out of the church or grave, when everyone decided to visit the graveyard on foot this plan no longer applied yet no one bothered to move the cars. Instead, they walked down to the main gate some distance away and entered. Terrible, terrible mistake! Now in a state of pure panic, everyone made a bee-line for the cars on the other side of the wrought iron fence. Like gazelles, most went over the tombstones in their path rather than around them. The fence was four feet tall but that proved to be no obstacle either to anyone attempting to stay ahead of a specter! I even saw one person who would normally have trouble walking and chewing gum at the same time making their debut much like an Olympic sprinter! My sister had brought along her four-year old son and from the scrapes and tears on his poor little torso we found when he got home, it was quite evident that she had cleared the fence herself perfectly but must have dragged the poor tyke either through it or over it! Oh well! One of those pitfalls that always has to be reckoned with when associating with amateur ‘ghost busters’. The little guy lived and recovered beautifully but has relinquished all his interest in ghosts forever.

All ten people then entered the cars at the same time and it sounded for all the world as if only one door slammed and one lock went down. Another unexpected event took place that caused even more concern. It was a full moon in a perfectly clear night-sky when we got there and nothing had changed that we knew about until suddenly it began to pour down rain and it could not have rained harder under a waterfall. When it became obvious to us that it was only raining over the top of our cars, all hell broke loose again! The rest of the area around the cars was as dry as the Sahara! Suddenly, no one cared what was happening or had happened to the ‘ghost light’! I doubt if anyone ever did so much as look back to see if the ghost was following or had been mangled in the ‘hurried exodus’. Without further hesitation, it seemed as though the engines on all three cars were started in unison as all were pulled out into the highway at the same time. What a surprise! We had gone only a few feet when suddenly, we were out of the rainstorm! And furthermore, we encountered no rain on the entire drive back home! Only a beautiful moonlit sky. Not one word was uttered until we got back to the house. Once there however, the Tower of Babel would have seemed quieter than an Egyptian tomb in comparison. Everyone was talking at the same time yet no one was taking time to listen. A jet engine surely would have been drowned out by the noise level.

That was the last time I agreed to take anyone with me when I made spectral or paranormal visits of any sort. When questioned afterwards, no one remembered or wanted to remember what happened to the ‘light’ that night after it entered the church. I often wondered if perhaps it heard all that awful clamor and screaming and took a quick retreat back into the grave. I think if I had been a ghost, I certainly would have!
